Paul Krause is vice chairman of Wilson Elser. He also is a member of the Chairman's Office, Executive Committee, and Senior Trial Group. Additionally, he is managing partner of the Washington, DC Metro Region, which includes the Washington, DC, Virginia and Baltimore offices.
In his legal practice, Paul leads Wilson Elser in the Washington, DC area in handling a wide variety of complex cases on behalf of corporations, lawyers, health care practitioners and other professionals. He has handled more than 50 jury trials. Paul’s litigation practice has included cases in numerous jurisdictions throughout the country. He has defended clients in many celebrated cases that were reported in both the local and national media, including Business Insurance and 60 Minutes.
Paul’s extensive experience and wealth of legal knowledge make him a highly regarded adviser to his clients and a rich resource for colleagues in his role as a member of the Senior Trial Group. Prior to entering private practice, Paul served as a Captain in the U.S. Marine Corps, including service at the White House.

Paul has handled attorney malpractice claims since 1977 and has been responsible for the defense of hundreds of cases since that time. He has defended such cases not only in the District of Columbia but also in Virginia, Maryland, New York, Arizona, Ohio, the U.S. Virgin Islands, South Carolina and North Carolina. Paul was retained as special counsel to the Trustee in Bankruptcy in New York to evaluate all legal malpractice claims (with the exception of those in California) made against a national law firm of 700 lawyers, the nation's fourth largest law firm at that time.
Paul is a prominent authority in the medical malpractice arena. His vast experience and his knowledge of the nuances and variations in the application of laws within different venues make him a formidable advocate in these cases. Paul defends physicians, nurses and other health care professionals against claims of professional negligence in complex, high-value cases. In addition, he represents hospitals and other medical facilities.
Paul represents professionals in a variety of industries. He is adept at formulating a defense strategy that will resolve claims expeditiously without undue expense. Paul encourages mediation and arbitration of disputes when appropriate, and he is recognized for his experience in representing professionals before administrative agencies and licensing boards, as well as in court.
Represented a physician in wrongful death actions, arising from multiple deaths occurring in Florida, Maryland, Virginia, Tennessee and Louisiana, that were the subject of a 60 Minutes segment.
Represented numerous psychiatric hospitals on the East Coast in more than 250 cases in which the hospitals were accused of both fraud and malpractice.
Represented a major medical device manufacturer in multi-district litigation involving the use of certain medical devices employed in spine surgery.
Represented the general counsel of a Maryland savings and loan institution accused of multiple acts of wrongdoing resulting in losses in excess of $200 million.
Represented a major insurer with respect to a bad faith claim stemming from an underlying legal malpractice claim. The claim reached the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals twice and was widely reported in the media.
