Valeri Williams is a former award-winning journalist who draws on her unique qualifications in investigative reporting to effectively litigate difficult cases. She worked for 20 years as a correspondent for ABC News and the local ABC affiliate in Dallas and received two prestigious Edward R. Murrow awards and an Emmy for her reporting. Valeri has used these same skills to help clients navigate high-stakes litigation. She is a committed litigator whose extensive communications and reputation management experience has helped clients in preparing to testify in depositions or at trial and respond to media exposure that may accompany a lawsuit.

Since coming to Wilson Elser in 2012, Valeri has built a litigation practice focused on employment and labor, intellectual property, insurance defense, fair housing disputes and complex commercial matters. She has successfully represented clients in cases of trademark and copyright disputes, trade secret misappropriation, employment discrimination and retaliation matters, breach of contract, environmental contamination, and defamation in state and federal court litigation, arbitration and mediation. Valeri also defends employers in administrative proceedings before the EEOC and the U.S. Department of Labor, and she represents clients before the Trademark Trial & Appeal Board.

Areas of Focus

Employment Litigation
Valeri represents one of the nation’s largest hospital chains in a wide array of employment disputes and advises the largest state employer of government workers on such matters as overtime pay regulations, social media policies and wrongful termination. Additionally, she has defended employers against charges of sexual harassment, gender discrimination, workers’ compensation retaliation, and violations of disability and medical leave laws. Valeri also has helped employers successfully enforce noncompetition and non-solicitation agreements and trade secret protections.

Intellectual Property
Valeri’s IP practice began as an offshoot of her employment law practice because her clients were encountering an increasing number of employees who misappropriated trade secrets or set up competing businesses with confusingly similar trademarks or trade dress. However, her skill in resolving trademark, trade dress and copyright issues has resulted in clients seeking her representation in non-employment matters. Valeri represents two of the largest franchising companies in the United States in the enforcement of their trademarks and trade dress. She also favorably represented one of Texas’s largest auto insurers in the Hispanic market in a trade dress dispute.
