Former New York State Assemblyman Jonathan Bing Joins Wilson Elser as a Partner in its New York City Office

Jonathan BingNEW YORK (September 12, 2012) Former New York State Assemblyman Jonathan L. Bing has joined Wilson Elser’s Midtown Manhattan office as a partner in its Government Relations practice – the state’s top-rated lobbying practice for the past 14 years.

Mr. Bing is charged with growing the Government Relations practice in New York City.

In addition to government relations, Mr. Bing’s practice focuses on insurance and employment law, an area in which he has practiced with another New York City law firm.

Mr. Bing most recently served as special deputy superintendent in charge of the 260-employee New York Liquidation Bureau (NYLB), appointed by Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Prior to joining the NYLB, Mr. Bing was elected to the New York State Assembly for five terms, representing the Upper East Side and East Midtown Manhattan from January 2003 through June 2011. During his tenure, he authored 85 bills that passed the Assembly, 35 of which also passed the Senate and were signed into law by four New York governors.

“We trust that Jonathan will hit the ground running,” shared Kenneth Shapiro, founder and chair of Wilson Elser’s Government Relations practice. “He’s a seasoned politician and an accomplished attorney. He intimately understands the legislative process and as result can effectively service our clients in the same manner in which he served his constituents for so many years.”

Mr. Bing’s most notable legislative achievements include: the 2006 law which expanded the statute of limitations for workers' compensation claims made by 9/11 rescue, recovery and clean-up workers; the 2010 no-fault divorce law; the 2010 adoption of the UPMIFA statute which allowed cultural and higher education institutions more flexibility with their endowments; and the 2008 law inspired by the East Side crane collapses, which enhanced criminal and civil penalties against those who would falsify construction records or illegally assist people with government licensing examinations.

Mr. Bing also authored several laws to reduce administrative burdens in the insurance and real estate industries to allow these businesses to be more successful during difficult economic times.

He has earned numerous awards and distinctions throughout his career including an honorary Doctor of Laws from LIM College, the Presidential Medal from Hunter College and the NYU College of Nursing Health Policy and Legislation Award, among others.

Mr. Bing is admitted to practice in New York and the District of Columbia and is admitted to the U.S. Supreme Court.

He earned his Juris Doctor degree from New York University School of Law (1995) and his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Pennsylvania (1992).
