D.J. Burrus Associate




D.J. Burrus defends clients in civil litigation matters in Texas state and federal courts. He has handled dozens of personal injury cases, including multiple catastrophic matters, stemming from motor vehicle collisions, slip-and-fall accidents, construction injuries and dram shop/alcohol service issues. Prior to joining Wilson Elser, D.J. was part of the trial team that handled Harris County's second in-person jury trial, post-COVID-19. 

D.J. has served as guest lecturer/speaker at numerous client presentations and events in the areas of professional development and leadership, the state of litigation affecting various industries, and awareness of laws and regulations surrounding liability. He also has testified before Texas legislative bodies on purposed legislative changes and amendments to the Texas Civil Practices and Remedies code, and in regard to the presentation of medical and billing record evidence in civil trials. D.J. was the Texas Bar Journal’s featured attorney for their “In Recess” column, “You Don’t Get Out of This Sport Unscathed,” in February 2020.

Areas of Focus

D.J.'s primary area of practice is transportation and trucking litigation matters. D.J. has successfully handled and mediated dozens of cases for the transportation industry, including successful results on multiple fatality matters on behalf of various trucking and transportation companies. Wilson Elser’s Transportation Practice has broad experience representing and defending U.S. and Canadian trucking companies, owner-operators, freight forwarders, freight brokers, common carriers, household goods carriers and others in interstate and intrastate claims in the United States, on the high seas and throughout the world. 

D.J. also has handled a variety of Retail and Hospitality claims, including alleged overservice of alcohol and slip-and-fall issues. These claims range from minor to catastrophic injury cases. Clients benefit from Wilson Elser’s knowledge and proactive analysis of operations structures. We routinely advise hospitality management on a variety of liability and best practice issues. 

D.J. has handled construction and worksite personal injury claims for subcontractors and construction industry companies. Wilson Elser’s service offering includes assisting countless public- and private-sector clients in mitigating and managing risk in connection with accidental injury and wrongful death. Claims frequently result from scaffolding and ladder failures, wall and roof collapses, falling tools and equipment, crane mishaps, construction vehicle accidents, electrical shocks and fires, and explosions.

D.J. has consulted with owners, operators and managers of various motocross and motorcycle tracks in and around the state of Texas, helping to establish and maintain proper safety policies and procedures. Wilson Elser has deep experience in the defense of product liability cases involving all types of motorized vehicles, including automobiles, motorcycles, ATVs, snowmobiles, boats, personal watercraft, outboard engines, all-terrain vehicles, off-road agricultural equipment, forklifts and other industrial equipment, and the full spectrum of component parts manufacturers for the industry.
