Helyna Haussler has more than 15 years of experience in complex civil litigation of toxic tort matters, including cases related to exposure to asbestos, lead paint and vinyl chloride. She also is experienced in general liability matters such as premises liability, security, trucking/transportation, and dental and legal malpractice. Additionally, Helyna has successfully defended several appeals made to the Court of Special Appeals of Maryland and the Court of Appeals of Maryland. She has handled various motions, including motions to dismiss, motions for summary judgment, discovery motions and motions in limine as well as appellate practice briefs.
Helyna believes in managing her clients’ stress levels by delivering timely, detailed updates on relevant matters and providing them with quick responses and around the clock availability. She maintains those all-important relationships with opposing counsel through a spirit of cooperation and respect, while never backing away from an aggressive defense and abiding by her client’s wishes regarding settlement versus proceeding to trial.
Helyna volunteers with the Homeless Persons Representations Project and heads various volunteer projects for Wilson Elser’s Baltimore office, including volunteer projects with Habitat for Humanity. She also participates in various meetings with local Baltimore City community organizations, including the Canton Community Association.
Toxic Tort / Asbestos Experience
Helyna’s asbestos clients include mechanical contractors; plastering contractors; auto parts suppliers, including suppliers of after-market brake/friction products; and product manufacturers, including manufacturers of valves, pumps, boilers, gaskets, crane brakes and electrical panels. She has dealt with various expert issues in asbestos matters, including defending expert depositions and deposing experts as well as preparing them for trial. She has also filed several briefs with various appellate courts that resulted in the successful defense against such appeals. Helyna’s avid interest in home renovation gives her an “insider’s” perspective on construction and construction practices.
