John I. Goodwin Of Counsel




John Goodwin represents insurance companies in insurance coverage litigation and advises them regarding complex coverage-related matters. With more than 25 years of experience as outside counsel and in-house counsel, John is adept at obtaining superior results for his clients expeditiously and cost-effectively.

John has represented American and British insurance companies in complex first-party and third-party insurance coverage litigation in Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas and throughout the United States. He has achieved successful outcomes for his clients in these matters, often by obtaining early dismissal through summary judgment. John has extensive experience in trying cases and arguing appeals in federal and state courts.

Prior to joining the firm, John served for more than 11 years as a senior litigation attorney with the in-house coverage group at the eighth-largest commercial insurer in the United States. John’s experience as in-house counsel provides him with unique insights into the needs of the insurers he represents.

John represents insurance companies in a broad range of insurance coverage lawsuits, including those involving first-party and third-party wrongful death, personal injury, property damage, vehicular, environmental, toxic tort, professional liability, marine, employment, and extracontractual/bad faith claims in jurisdictions throughout the United States. John has extensive experience in all aspects of litigation, including discovery, dispositive motions, mediation, trial and appeal.

John often advises and provides coverage opinions to clients regarding their defense and indemnity obligations under a broad range of insurance policies, including commercial general liability, commercial property, professional liability, marine, homeowners, vehicle and excess policies. John also counsels insurance companies on avoiding exposure for extracontractual/bad faith claims.

Representative Matters

Obtained summary judgment for insurer from the U.S. District Court, Western District of Texas in multimillion-dollar suit by insured’s employee who was sexually assaulted in insured’s convenience store, and prevailed on appeal of the summary judgment before the U.S. Court of Appeals, Fifth Circuit.

Obtained summary judgment in a $3 million environmental pollution suit in the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Texas.

Saved insurers more than $60 million by defeating class certification of 3,000 plaintiffs in hailstorm and toxic mold litigation.

Won zero-damages trial verdict for E&O insurer in multimillion-dollar professional negligence suit.

Saved insurer $5 million in 21 wrongful death suits by relatives of nursing home residents who perished during Hurricane Katrina, most of which were settled without contribution from the insurer.
