Lori D. Barker Of Counsel




Lori Barker has broad experience with insurance coverage, premises liability, product liability, personal injury, property losses, and transportation and construction litigation. Her experience includes complex, multi-party litigation and catastrophic injuries. Lori’s practice also includes representing insurers pursuant to the Louisiana Direct Action Statue, evaluating coverage and defending bad faith claims.

Lori began her career at a New Orleans area civil defense firm headquartered in Lafayette. She gained valuable courtroom experience that prepared her to work as in-house counsel for a major personal and commercial lines insurer. Lori has successfully defended clients in the state, federal, appellate and workers’ compensation courts of Louisiana. She also gained experience with multidistrict litigation while representing a trailer manufacturer in a nearly five-year FEMA bellwether trial regarding claims of toxic exposure in a product liability context.

Lori has worked with clients to develop training programs for client-specific issues such as best practices following a vehicle accident, protecting construction lien rights, relevant law updates and training materials.

Areas of Focus

General Casualty
Lori has acted as defense counsel for individuals, businesses and insurance companies named in casualty litigation. She is proficient at differentiating matters that may be resolved at an early stage from those that require thorough discovery and motion practice. As a result, Lori is able to provide her clients with knowledgeable evaluations so that they may make informed litigation decisions. 

Insurance Coverage/Bad Faith Litigation
Lori’s practice includes defense of insurers named in Louisiana litigation pursuant to the Direct Action Statute and those that have been sued for alleged acts of bad faith. Lori also analyzes insurance policies, providing guidance to insurers regarding coverage interpretations, reservation letters and appointment of litigation counsel to preserve policy defenses. 

Premises Liability
Lori’s family has owned commercial property for three generations. This experience gives her practical insight into those personal injury cases where the injury was alleged to have been caused by an unsafe or defective condition on a property. 

Construction Litigation
Lori has represented landowners on strict liability construction claims arising out of ultra-hazardous activities as well as general contractors and subcontractors in construction defect litigation. She has handled cases related to the New Home Warranty Act and is familiar with the requirements and nuisances of the law. In the past, Lori regularly represented a commercial contractor in a wide variety of matters ranging from liens to federal contract payment disputes. 

Lori has defended individuals, owner/operator truckers and diverse businesses named in lawsuits due to car accidents. Lori has handled cases where injuries ranged from soft tissue damages to traumatic brain injuries and other catastrophic injury. Lori is familiar with the State and Federal rules and regulations relevant in transportation cases.

Representative Matters

Successfully argued a Motion for Summary judgment that resulted in dismissal of an aviation client from a lawsuit arising from a plane crash where damages were sought for the wrongful death of one passenger and severe mental and physical injuries of another. 

Obtained a favorable jury verdict in trial in Orleans Parish in a commercial transportation personal injury case. Plaintiff sought damages in the amount of $525,443.00 and the jury awarded $27,146, which was then reduced by 60% resulting in a net award of $10,862.40. Plaintiff's Motion for Judgment Notwithstanding the Verdict was denied and, ultimately, the case was not appealed.
