Lou Isaacsohn focuses his practice on employment practices liability, professional liability, mediation, general liability and casualty, and insurance-reinsurance. In addition, he handles premises liability, nursing home liability, dram shop, legal, medical, architects and engineers/construction, and agents and brokers malpractice defense. Throughout his career, Lou has been involved in all phases of litigation in state and federal court as well as before various state and federal agencies. He has a significant background in employment issues, all phases of insurance litigation involving insurance coverage matters, and commercial litigation. Lou has been called upon by major for-profit and not-for-profit corporations to represent them as counsel of record. In addition, Lou has extensively represented domestic and foreign insurance carriers to provide insurance coverage opinions and guidance in insurance-related matters and to represent them in declaratory judgment actions. In recent years, Lou has developed a mediation practice for both federal and state actions with an emphasis on the mediation of employment cases.

Lou's broad legal background and experience create an interconnection of disciplines, which he successfully integrates with innovative legal strategies, and which provides a foundation for an effective mediator. Lou has been described as a lawyer who combines common sense and excellent judgment with a natural feel for the law. He possesses a simultaneously low-key/appropriately aggressive approach as a litigator and a mediator. Lou has been told that he has the “demeanor” to be an arbitrator. His knowledge of coverage combined with his litigation skills gives clients an edge in the courtroom and in mediation. Prior to joining the firm, Lou was a senior counsel/chief lubes counsel and adviser with a major international petroleum company.

Professional Liability
Lou’s practice includes substantial experience in most areas of professional liability regarding employment practices, architects and engineers, lawyers, agents and brokers, nurses, doctors and dentists. Throughout his career, he has addressed litigation issues involving directors and officers, brokers, and errors and omissions.

Mediation
Lou has developed a broad-based mediation practice with an emphasis on employment mediation. He is an approved mediator for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the U.S. District Court and as a Judge Pro Tem for the Commerce Court for the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas. Lou also is an approved arbitrator for the U.S. District Court and the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas.

Bad Faith
Lou has been involved in all phases of insurance litigation involving insurance coverage and bad faith matters; all phases of insurance litigation involving insurance coverage matters; and commercial litigation.

Directors & Officers
Throughout his career, Lou has addressed litigation involving claims against directors and officers. He has extensive experience handling all phases of litigation involving such claims.

General Liability
Lou’s legal practice includes general liability insurance, and he is heavily involved in all phases of insurance litigation involving insurance coverage matters. His experience includes a wide variety of general liability policies and related claims and litigation. Additionally, his practice focuses on nursing and rehabilitation facilities defense. In recent years, Lou has taken on and defended an increasing number of nursing homes and managed care facilities.

Lou’s legal practice includes substantial experience in most areas of professional liability regarding architects and engineers, lawyers, real estate agents, nurses, doctors, dentists, and insurance agents and brokers. He also has a significant background in employment issues. Throughout his career, Lou has addressed litigation issues involving directors and officers, brokers, and errors and omissions. He is also heavily involved in all phases of litigation centering on insurance coverage matters, as well as commercial litigation.

Lawyers' Liability
Lou has extensive experience in all types of litigation, including defense of lawyers in malpractice cases. He has experience representing clients in numerous state and federal courts of various jurisdictions, and in hundreds of trials, arbitrations, fact-finding conferences and mediations. Lou has assisted in writing risk management guidelines and employment handbooks and contracts, while providing extensive counseling to clients on preventive measures to avoid malpractice claims. Additionally, he has handled a wide range of legal and insurance matters throughout his career, providing him with a broad range of experience and legal perspective.

Construction
Lou is experienced in construction issues and professional liability involving licensed people associated with design work. Since joining the firm in 1985, Lou has expanded his insurance coverage practice to include extensive coverage work involving directors and officers, construction defect and professional liability policies. He has served as defense counsel in a variety of complex cases, including construction defects, employment practices liability and professional liability, including architects, engineers and surveyors, products and general liability matters.

Representative Matters

Obtained summary judgment in a recent federal court Americans with Disabilities Act case brought against a major stevedoring company that operates the Philadelphia ports.

Defense verdict in state court in a medical malpractice case brought against a physical therapist for alleged negligence for allowing a 78-year-old stroke victim in therapy to fall, leading to a significant exacerbation of his stroke symptoms and overall general decline.

Resolution of or outright dismissals of eleven individual cases brought before the state human relations commission against a large nursing home for racial discrimination.

Representation of and a favorable resolution for a major international entertainer for the alleged negligence of his company in allowing a steel truss to fall off a forklift in a construction accident while setting up the stage for an outdoor concert, leading to the leg amputation case of a 25-year-old worker.

Dismissal with prejudice during the trial of the City of Lebanon, PA, its police department and several police officers, and the chief of police and mayor in a civil rights action brought by the only female police officer on the force.

Voluntary dismissal with prejudice of two nursing home cases for alleged violations of federal and state laws for abuse of residents.

A very favorable resolution of a legal malpractice and abuse of process case against a well-known Philadelphia lawyer.

A voluntary dismissal with prejudice of an international petroleum company for alleged breach of contract and tortuous interference with contract claims in the middle of the trial.

A very favorable resolution of a nursing home negligence case wherein it was alleged that pleasure feedings to an ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) patient caused him to choke and die.
