Melissa D. James Associate




Melissa James focuses her legal practice on workers’ compensation defense of employers and insurance carriers, handling workers’ compensation cases from inception to resolution. 

Melissa joined Wilson Elser with a broad range of experience in all areas of litigation, having represented injured workers in complex workers’ compensation claims, participated in noteworthy government investigations against charitable institutions, and performed due diligence reviews in high-profile residential mortgage-backed securities cases. Melissa’s litigation experience gives her an advantage when defending insurance claims against injured workers. She recognizes that clients seek cost-effective handling of these matters, and accommodates them through early assessment of exposure with recommendations for prompt resolution whenever possible. 

Melissa is an adjunct professor at a fashion business school in New York City where she teaches undergraduate courses in Business and Fashion Law. As an advocate for social justice, Melissa volunteers with nonprofit organizations, assisting in projects dedicated to eliminating human sex trafficking, domestic violence and bias voting initiatives. She was acknowledged by her former firm as a Pro Bono Champion in 2017. 

During law school, Melissa served as a judicial extern for the Honorable Robert R. Rigsby, Superior Court, Washington, DC.
