Thomas Murphy Associate




Thomas Murphy is a litigator and trial lawyer who represents individuals and businesses in civil litigation, including the defense of personal injury claims, general liability claims, insurance coverage disputes and employment litigation. He has tried cases to verdict as lead counsel and as a team member in Massachusetts superior and district courts. In addition to defending cases to a verdict, Tom has experience preserving the verdicts in the Massachusetts Appeals Court. 

Tom's primary focus is the defense of individuals and businesses in personal injury claims. He has extensive experience defending and trying catastrophic personal injury and wrongful death claims. Tom has defended numerous individuals and businesses in claims involving automobile accidents, premises liability, maritime collisions, fire/explosions and workplace accidents. While Tom prepares each case thoroughly for trial and tries many cases, he has significant experience resolving cases in arbitration and mediation.

Tom has developed a reputation for handling cases with unique circumstances and situations. He has represented businesses and individuals in cases involving defamation, large property losses, negligent security and negligent maintenance. He has represented insurance companies in coverage disputes and bad faith claims. In addition, Tom has represented companies in employment disputes, including wrongful termination of employment and compensation claims. 

Tom joined Wilson Elser after 11 years at a mid-size Massachusetts firm specializing in all aspects of litigation. Prior to that he worked nearly 10 years as a captain and first mate aboard cruise vessels and ferries operating in New England and New York waterways, where he piloted high-speed vessels, managed crewmembers and was responsible for the safety and satisfaction of a high volume of passengers.

Obtained defense verdict as lead trial lawyer in action brought against a motorist whose vehicle collided with the rear of the plaintiff’s vehicle.

Member of team that obtained a defense verdict on a wrongful death claim brought against an operator and owner of a dump truck; successfully defended the verdict on appeal over an issue regarding the scope of the testimony proffered by an expert called by the plaintiff.
