Constitution Day

Tyler Junior College, Tyler, Texas

People: Matt Rowan

Matt Rowan (Partner-Tyler, TX), president of the Smith County Bar Foundation, participated in and hosted Constitution Day at Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas. Nearly 200 students from area high schools and Tyler Junior College witnessed the importance of the Constitution as they watched the 12th Court of Appeals deliberate real cases as part of a special program hosted by the Smith County Bar Foundation for Constitution Day. On a day meant to celebrate the nation's founding document, the lesson wasn't in a textbook but in an actual courtroom setting. "I think it's important to recognize and appreciate the Constitution for what it is," said Matt … "It's a great opportunity for them to really see the Constitution at work in a true process that was set up nearly 240 years ago." Regarding the day in Tyler, Matt said, "This is a very high-level intellectual debate with specific rules," Rowan said. "But it's fascinating to be able to watch it and see how cases actually work versus how TV tends to focus on the drama and not necessarily on the law." Both cases argued to the 12th Court of Appeals dealt with the issues of cyber-bullying,  cyber stalking, and defamation online and the way the laws of Texas seek to protect the citizens from such actions.  Matt was able to convince the 12th Court of Appeals to have oral argument in a public forum for only the second time in its history, and he thanks the Justices of the 12th Court of Appeals for allowing the Smith County Bar Foundation to host such a great event.
