John Cahill (Associate-White Plains, NY) will present “Bitcoin Benefactors: Navigating the Legal Maze of Crypto Donations,” a National Business Institute (NBI) webinar, on February 10, 2025. This CLE program is designed for attorneys, accountants, tax professionals, and nonprofit directors. As cryptocurrencies grow in favor for charitable giving, offering donors faster, more secure, and lower-cost transactions compared to traditional payment methods. Accepting crypto gifts directly is tricky for charities because of value fluctuation, tax and documentation/receipt issues, converting digital assets to flat currency, and other issues. For donors, crypto assets pose their own problems: claiming the deduction, meeting timelines, and so forth. John will discuss ways to mitigate the risks, show how cryptocurrency donations are classified and reported, weigh the value of donor anonymity versus transparency requirements, and identify top challenges to setting up a crypto donations program.
