Jonathan Meer (Partner-New York, NY) and colleagues from Legalign Global presented on the topic of social inflation to the Lloyd's Market Association, General Liability Claims Committee on October 5, 2021. Social inflation is generally understood to refer to the increase in insured losses in liability lines attributable to adverse legislative, judicial, social, economic and technical developments. Jonathan's portion of the presentation focused on U.S. examples, such as the increased amount of litigation and accompanying costs, and the increase in attorney advertising. Jonathan also addressed the impact of tort reform in the United States, in particular how the COVID-19 pandemic has influenced certain tort reform laws in various jurisdictions.
