John R. Shepperd (Partner-Houston, TX) will present “Prosecuting and Defending Never Events” in a Houston Bar Association CLE webinar on October 16, 2026. The term “never event” generally refers to preventable medical occurrences involving errors so egregious that they should never happen. John's presentation will examine how never events occur in the operating room, how to prevent them, why they continue to happen despite established safety measures, and the legal challenges of prosecuting and defending claims arising from these incidents. The presentation will focus on three types of never events: wrong patient/wrong side surgery, operating room fires, and retained objects.
