Nurse Practitioners in the World of Pain Management: A Cautionary Tale

The Journal for Nurse Practitioners

Volume 12, Issue 2, February 2016

Authors: John R. Shepperd, Shadonna E. Hale

John R. Shepperd (Partner-Houston) and Shadonna E. Hale (Of Counsel-Baltimore/Washington, DC) collaborated on an article that appeared in the February 2016 issue of The Journal for Nurse Practitioners titled “Nurse Practitioners in the World of Pain Management: A Cautionary Tale.” The article, which was selected as a continuing education (CE) article by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, is based on a true story about a nurse practitioner who ran a private practice and “dabbled” in pain management. Her office was raided by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency and she was subjected to a subsequent investigation by her state’s board of nursing. John and Shadonna discuss the standard of care violations asserted by the board of nursing, defenses maintained by the nurse practitioner and standard-of-care practice tips that can be learned from this case.
