In Memory of Rodney Blaine Lewis: 1940 –2018

Arizona Attorney

April 2019

Author: James T. Tucker

James Tucker (Of Counsel-Las Vegas) pays tribute to the first Native American attorney admitted to the State Bar of Arizona in his article in the April 2019 issue of Arizona Attorney magazine. “In Memory of Rodney Blaine Lewis: 1940 –2018” sets forth an account of Lewis, the founder and first Chair of the State Bar’s Indian Law Section, the first Gila River tribal member to serve as the Community’s General Counsel, and the first Native American to argue a case before the United States Supreme Court. “Rod is legendary for his life of ‘firsts,’” says Jim, “but his greatest legacies are in the people and land of the Gila River Indian Community.”
