Law360 Shines Pro Bono Spotlight on Jim Tucker

November 14, 2014

Jim Tucker (Of Counsel-Las Vegas) was profiled in Law360’s October 31, 2014, Pro Bono Spotlight, a recurring series profiling law firm pro bono efforts. Native Alaskans obtained the right to voting materials and assistance in their native dialects after winning a federal court order with the pro bono backing of Jim, who represented the native tribal councils and individuals along with lawyers from the nonprofit Native American Rights Fund and another firm. The recent order for native speakers of Gwich’in or Yup’ik is the result of years of work to force a recalcitrant state bureaucracy into action. The state argued that it has been in compliance with the Voting Rights Act because some polling places were staffed by workers who spoke English as well as a local language. Jim called that measure sporadic as well as ineffective, even at polling stations where bilingual poll workers could be found. The case is Mike Toyukuk et al. v. Mead Treadwell et al., case number 3:13-cv-00137 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Alaska.
