McDonough Obtains Award for Pro Bono Client in Disputed Termination of Employment Claim

September 30, 2020

Kathleen McDonough (Of Counsel-Chicago) recently won an appeal of a disputed unemployment claim before the Wisconsin Unemployment Insurance Division Appeal Tribunal. A homeless woman living in Milwaukee, working as a certified nursing assistant (CNA) at a retirement home, claimed her employment was terminated unjustifiably and without notice for tardiness due to transportation issues. This was in spite of the fact that her other team members willingly covered for her, and she worked double shifts to make up the time difference, with the approval of her employer. The initial unemployment claim was denied and Kathleen represented the homeless woman pro bono in the appeal. For reasons unknown, the employer failed to appear for the telephonic appeal and Kathleen was allowed to present her case, resulting in the reversal of the initial finding and an award to her client.
