U.S. News & World Report Quotes Tucker on Significant Undercounts of Indigenous People in the 2020 Census

Jim Tucker (Of Counsel-Las Vegas), pro bono counsel for the Native American Rights Fund, was quoted in “Why Native Americans Don’t Share the Government’s Optimism About the Census,” an article that appeared in the October 30, 2020, issue of U.S. News & World Report. Jim, who also serves as chair of the Census Bureau's National Advisory Committee on Racial, Ethnic and Other Populations, says reports from Indian Country indicate that "reservations were largely understaffed by census takers, and they had such a huge number of cases they had to close out that they just took shortcuts." He adds, “We are looking at the most complicated census that has ever been conducted because of COVID-19. The quality of those numbers is going to be significantly in doubt."
