Wilson Elser Awards 2017 Scholarship to Madison Washington

The Thomas W. Wilson Sr. Scholarship Named for a Founder of the Firm

DALLAS. (June 16, 2017) National law firm Wilson Elser is proud to announce that it has presented its Thomas W. Wilson Sr. Scholarship for 2017 to Madison Washington, the daughter of Shelly Wells, a legal secretary in the firm’s Dallas, Texas, office.

Washington, a student at Hil College in Hillsboro, Texas, will enter her second year in the Registered Nursing Program at the school. Her future plans encompass earning a bachelor’s degree in nursing followed by a master’s degree to become an orthopedic nurse practitioner at an orthopedic trauma unit.

Always focused on a career in nursing, Washington took dual credit courses in high school, allowing her to graduate and enter college as a sophomore with a 3.8 grade point average. Today, she is halfway through her nursing program at Hill College and working at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Hillcrest in Waco, Texas, as a nurse technician.

“We are very pleased to award this year’s Thomas W. Wilson Sr. Scholarship to such a hard-working, deserving recipient,” said Daniel J. McMahon, Wilson Elser chairman. “The first in her immediate family to attend college, Madison has never wavered from her goal of becoming a nurse. We are very proud of her accomplishments and know she will continue to set lofty goals for herself − and achieve them. Congratulations to Madison and Shelly and the rest of their family.”

The Thomas W. Wilson Sr. Scholarship Program, named for one of the firm’s founders, was established to support the college education of selected award recipients who are children of current, full-time Wilson Elser employees. This is the eighth scholarship the program has awarded since its inception in 2010.

The scholarship provides its recipients with $10,000 per year for up to four years or graduation from an accredited college or university, whichever occurs first.

The scholarship is independently awarded through a third party, and applicants are evaluated on academic performance, demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities, work experience, a statement of career and educational goals and objectives, and unusual personal or family circumstances.
