Daring to Lead

Las Vegas WAVE Chapter

Date: November 8, 2019
Location: Las Vegas, NV

Karen L. Bashor (Partner-Las Vegas) and the Las Vegas WAVE team hosted “WAVE Makers − Daring to Lead,” their third annual WAVE event with speakers who embodied the theme in every sense of its message. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, the first woman elected from Nevada and first Latina elected to the U.S. Senate, set the stage by recounting how she followed in the footsteps of trailblazers and accepted the responsibility of keeping the way open for others. Career strategist Janet Wise and Aliah Berman, Director of Diversity, Equality and Inclusion at GMR Marketing, provided the foundation for key themes of the conference on strategies for success and prioritizing diversity and inclusion.

Panelists at the conference who shared their experiences and lessons on climbing the corporate ladder of success included Sheri Thome (Partner-Las Vegas), Uber Senior Counsel West, Central and Canada Tracey Angelopoulos and Sandra Douglass Morgan, Chairwoman of the Nevada Gaming Board. A second panel to discuss embracing your power, moving up, and giving back to the community included Senior Judge Nancy Oesterle (the first woman appointed to the justice court bench in its 89-year history in Nevada), Shane Jasmine (law firm owner and founder of Women Decision Makers in Las Vegas) and Barbara Buckley (the first woman to hold the position of Majority Leader and then Speaker of the Nevada State Assembly and Executive Director of the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada). Danna Lovell, Executive Director of Emerge Nevada, showed the impact of supporting women and giving them the tools to succeed, making Nevada the first state in the nation to have a woman majority legislature.

Karen then delivered a personal tribute to the RBG necklace that marked her partnership at the firm to introduce Nevada Supreme Court Justice Elissa Cadish who delivered a powerful keynote on her personal story of overcoming adversity, making her historic position as part of the court’s first woman majority all the more meaningful, and resulted in a standing ovation by the more than 120 guests. U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen from Nevada closed the conference with a tribute to her “trailblazer,” Senator Masto, and acknowledged Nevada’s historical milestones for women leaders, inspiring the audience to go out and make waves as “there’s no glass ceiling we cannot shatter.”
