Dealing with Difficult Clients - Ethical and Practical Considerations

In his presentation Patrick Kearns (Associate-San Diego) focused on legal professionals' obligations and the ethical issues that arise when confronted with clients who are unresponsive, excessively nervous, angry or even deceitful. Mr. Kearns discussed the ethical rules relating to proper communication with clients with a focus on developing methods for ensuring clients stay informed in litigation and practical ways to protect yourself and your firm while maintaining the duties owed to your client. He also discussed the ethical and practical considerations involved if and when withdrawing as counsel becomes necessary.

Mr. Kearns is a member and secretary of the San Diego County Bar's Legal Ethics Committee and he frequently speaks to various groups on issues pertaining to legal ethics.
