Jeff Araten focuses his practice on counseling and defending hospitals and health care professionals against medical malpractice claims, and long-term care facilities in a variety of matters. With thorough preparation, excellent written communications, and strong oral advocacy skills, Jeff takes his cases from inception through trial.

The medical malpractice cases Jeff has defended involved the full range of claims from newborn brain damage and quadriplegia, to wrongful death arising from all types of surgeries, to failure to diagnose cancer and other medical conditions. He has represented physicians practicing in a variety of medical specialties, including obstetrics and gynecology, pathology, orthopedics, radiology, otolaryngology, physiatry, gastroenterology, anesthesiology, podiatry, and dentistry. Jeff also regularly defends emergency room physicians in medical malpractice claims. In addition, Jeff regularly represents health care providers charged with professional misconduct before the New York State Education Department and in connection with licensing matters.

Cases that Jeff handles in connection with nursing homes and rehabilitation facilities typically arise from the development of decubitus ulcers, falls that lead to fractures or brain injuries, and allegations of failure to diagnose or properly treat a patient. He also has extensive experience representing providers of home nursing services.

Jeff has served on the firm’s Education Committee and is one of the New York partners responsible for the firm’s Associate Training Program. He has presented risk management seminars and participated in mock trials for residents, carriers, and insureds.

Prior to joining Wilson Elser, Jeff handled medical device product liability, toxic tort, and business litigation matters.
