Brett Corson (Partner-Boston) is extensively quoted in a June 1, 2023, Relias Media article, “Reality TV Shows Still Pose Great Risks to Hospitals.” The article addresses the inherent and incidental risks involved in hospitals allowing television shows to record in their facilities. Brett discusses how patient consent is a primary concern but notes that acquiring it can be difficult. “The nature of a hospital, especially one with an active emergency department and/or trauma center, is such that people may not be able to consent to appear in a television show.” He further cautions, “Aside from the HIPAA risks of disclosing private medical information, hospitals should be concerned about private lawsuits and security risks, including cybersecurity.” Brett also provides a series of suggested policies hospitals should consider implementing before allowing cameras to roll.
