James Tucker (Of Counsel-Las Vegas) was questioned in regard to “Census count is ‘an act of rebellion,’” an article in the January 20, 2020, issue of News Maven. Jim is pro bono voting rights counsel to the Native American Rights Fund and vice chair of the Census Bureau’s National Advisory Committee on Racial, Ethnic, and Other Populations. Census undercounts, said Jim, “among other issues, affect whether candidates who support tribal sovereignty and understand Native issues get elected”; however, he noted, “I don't think there's any other population that has so many different, hard-to-count characteristics layered on top of one another.” Jim listed hurdles such as geographic isolation and disconnection, cultural differences and language barriers.
