On September 21, 2021, the State Bar of Wisconsin hosted a free expungement clinic in Kenosha in partnership with Legal Action of Wisconsin. Milwaukee associates Alex L. Silvola and Jehona (Hona) Osmani joined a group of volunteer attorneys from the greater Milwaukee area at the clinic and were able to serve sixty individuals.

The clinic’s name belied the broad range of services that were offered, free of charge. The clinic was an opportunity for individuals with an arrest or conviction record to learn more about their legal rights and eligibility to remove or seal any false or inaccurate information. In addition to expungement, Alex and Hona were also able to help eligible individuals apply for pardons as well as help shorten their criminal history by removing dismissed misdemeanor and felony charges from their criminal record. The volunteers found the clinic to be a rewarding experience as they were able to help several individuals eliminate criminal histories on their criminal record as the law allows, which has largely hindered several of these individuals’ ability to apply for jobs to support themselves and their families. This clinic is hosted at various locations throughout the year, and Alex and Hona are looking forward to volunteering again and continuing to assist low-income individuals in gaining greater access to housing and jobs in the future.
