Brian Thompson (Of Counsel-San Francisco, CA) was quoted in the November 15, 2021, edition of Automotive News in an article titled “Autopilot Probe Primes NHTSA for Rule Action, More Active Regulation of Tech Expected.” In light of recent incidents resulting from advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), namely the 12 Tesla crashes that resulted in 17 injuries and one death, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) may potentially issue new regulations amid ongoing safety investigations. “Could they be on the verge of making some recommendations – whether voluntary compliance standards or new or amended Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards? Anything’s possible … But the increased notoriety of accidents involving ADAS and involving consumers’ overestimation of the technology’s capabilities certainly is going to put pressure on NHTSA to take action.”
