Justin Hazlett handles all aspects of general civil defense matters from initial pleadings through discovery to trial in all state and federal courts throughout Indiana. He represents insurance carriers and insured businesses and individuals sued in tort litigation, including premises liability, general liability, vehicle accident liability and product liability.

Justin’s 20-year career with the Office of the Indiana Attorney General, most recently as Deputy Attorney General and Section Chief of Consumer Litigation, well equips him to effectively counsel businesses, respond to government investigations and defend against government enforcement actions. As Section chief, Justin oversaw enforcement of state consumer protection laws and competition laws, as well as laws governing public charitable trusts and nonprofit corporations. He managed the identification of subjects for investigation, assigned case teams to investigate and litigate cases, supervised the progress of investigations and civil actions, and assisted with the formulation of litigation and negotiation strategies.

Areas of Focus

Government Enforcement Actions
As a 20-year veteran of the Office of the Indiana Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division, Justin has successfully resolved a multitude of government investigations and civil actions involving state and federal UDAP (unfair and deceptive practices) claims and other consumer law claims alleging deception, fraud or unfair practices. Justin's experience ranges from small cases involving one consumer complainant to large multi-state cases worked in conjunction with other state and federal enforcement authorities and involving thousands of impacted consumers.

Given the unique pre-litigation investigative tools at their disposal and significant resources to expend on investigations and actions, governmental enforcement agencies require an effective response. This means proactively engaging with the agency to reasonably meet its demands while at the same time ensuring the client’s interests are protected. Justin’s extensive experience on the other side of the table gives his clients an edge in this regard.

Justin has similar investigation and enforcement experience with respect to nonprofit organizations and public charitable trusts. He has successfully resolved numerous cases involving claims that nonprofit corporations or their directors misapplied or wasted corporate assets, failed in their corporate purposes or breached their fiduciary duties.
