Twelve Wilson Elser attorneys responded to a call to volunteer after a May 2021 training with Safe Passage, a group that seeks to train, monitor and mentor volunteers willing to help represent children in New York who are in immigration removal proceedings. Children detained at the border are sent to a handful of locations, and New York receives the majority of the unaccompanied minors who flee to the United States to escape dangerous conditions. Without an attorney, less than 15 percent successfully argue their case to remain in the country, but with an attorney, at least 85 percent are permitted to stay. Currently, the firm is handling several open Safe Passage cases.
