Nicholas Lane serves as Deputy Regional Managing Partner of Wilson Elser’s San Francisco office. Nicholas has represented individuals and organizations in a broad variety of national and international disputes before federal and state courts and in alternative dispute resolutions. Prior to joining Wilson Elser, Nicholas primarily represented plaintiffs, including at preeminent national law firms, and draws on this experience to defend clients at Wilson Elser by identifying and mitigating exposure and developing leverage opportunities against opposing parties.

Areas of Focus

Third-Party Crime Litigation
A substantial portion of Nicholas’s current practice is in the defense of private commercial security firms in lawsuits arising out of third-party criminal acts, including mass shootings, officer-involved shootings, death in custody incidents, crisis response and corporate incident investigations. One of his largest clients is a business services company that provides security services, security systems, janitorial services and/or staffing services to more than half of the Fortune 500 companies in the United States, its territories and Canada.

Admiralty & Marine
Nicholas has handled maritime cases in state and federal courts, including those involving claims by merchant marines under the Jones Act, commercial fishermen, and passengers aboard ferries, cruise ships and various pleasure craft. He is skilled in interpreting general maritime law as well as the provisions of various maritime statutes. Nicholas began his legal career as a clerk in an Admiralty office while attending law school at night in San Francisco. He also has a professional background in the marine industry as a navigational officer aboard commercial ships.

Product Liability
Nicholas has extensive experience representing subrogating insurers and manufacturers in product liability matters involving a wide variety of products including consumer electronics, construction equipment and materials, vehicles, commercial and industrial electrical equipment, and marine apparatus and equipment. His product liability practice includes toxic tort and asbestos litigation.
