Wilson Elser is committed to continually strengthening and expanding our bench of exceptional trial lawyers. We place the highest premium on professional development, with a particular focus on cultivating the next generation of trial attorneys. The Wilson Elser Institute, a proprietary in-house enterprise, administers our National Trial Advocacy Training (NTAT) and Mock Trial offerings. Through these initiatives, and under the guidance of the firm’s National Trial Team (NTT) leaders, many of the firm’s most experienced trial lawyers cover the latest trends in trial and courtroom strategy and technology, preparing attorneys to be skilled litigators equipped to handle all aspects of trial work. The annual NTAT curriculum includes instruction in:
- Jury selection
- Closing arguments and summations
- Examination of fact witnesses
- Legal fault evaluation and defense strategy
- Opening statements and courtroom decorum
- Error preservation at trial
- Fundamentals of trial preparation
- Trial motions
- Evidentiary foundations and objections
- Producing and defending witnesses at depositions
- Deconstructing the plaintiff and defense counsel’s playbooks
- Jury selection in serious injury cases
- Working with experts and navigating their reports
Scores of Wilson Elser attorneys have benefited from our NTAT presentations and training and biennial Mock Trial Invitational. Invitational participants engage in comprehensive pre-work, convene for a full-day mock trial in our New York City office and participate in faculty-led feedback sessions, video review, and small-group coaching. Proceedings, including jury deliberations, are videotaped and replayed for competitors, with feedback from NTT courtroom observers and judges. Many participants advance to the National Trial Team. All benefit from meaningful networking and collaborative opportunities.
The result of this dedicated, ongoing training and mentorship is a strong and sustainable pipeline of trial talent ready to serve our clients.
